Constipation: 5 natural remedies that really work (+ 3 mistakes)
A heavy stomach, a feeling of fullness that lasts for days, infrequent bowel movements (fewer than 3 a week), difficult or incomplete evacuation: constipation affects around 1 in 5 adults, and 2 out of 3 women experience it at least occasionally. Yet most of the "solutions" sold in pharmacies (synthetic laxatives taken routinely, suppositories, repeated enemas) make the problem worse in the long run by desensitising the colon.
The good news is that both chronic and occasional constipation respond very well to a natural approach, as long as you work on the 5 real levers that regulate your transit. Here is the complete method we recommend at Happy Detox Tea — plus the 3 common mistakes you should absolutely avoid.
What is constipation, really?
Constipation is defined by 3 medically recognised criteria: fewer than 3 bowel movements a week, hard stools that are difficult to pass, and a feeling of incomplete evacuation. There are two main types:
Slow-transit constipation (lazy bowel)
Intestinal contents move too slowly through the colon. Common causes: lack of fibre, a sedentary lifestyle, dehydration, travel, changes in routine, stress. This is the most common form and the one that responds best to natural solutions.
Outlet constipation (dyschezia)
Contents reach the rectum normally, but evacuation is difficult. It is often linked to pelvic floor dysfunction, and sometimes to repeatedly holding it in (often since childhood). This form sometimes requires medical support.
In the vast majority of cases (80% of constipation is slow-transit), a well-managed natural approach brings first changes within one to two weeks — results vary from person to person.
Why synthetic laxatives often make things worse
Synthetic stimulant laxatives (bisacodyl, sodium picosulfate…) force the colon to contract. In the short term, it "works": things get moving. But in the medium term, these molecules gradually desensitise the nerve endings of the colon, which responds less and less to natural signals.
The result: you become dependent. You need higher doses, then a different molecule, then combinations. After a few months, the colon barely works without outside stimulation. This is what is known as "laxative colon", well documented in gastroenterology.
Traditional plants with a laxative effect (such as senna) work differently: at moderate doses and combined with other plants that support transit (Pu'er, ginger, cassia), they support the body's natural function rather than replacing it. Many of our customers have used them for years and tolerate them well, as long as they stick to moderate doses and structured programmes.
The 5 natural solutions that really work
1. Traditional plants for regularity
Three plants are particularly well known for supporting natural, regular transit:
- Senna (Senna alexandrina) — a gentle laxative plant traditionally used in short courses or as a regular low-dose routine. In our blends, senna is combined with other plants that balance its action.
- Yunnan Pu'er — a fermented dark tea traditionally drunk in China to ease the digestion of rich meals and support transit.
- Ginger (Zingiber officinale) — supports digestion and healthy bowel motility. Excellent paired with Pu'er.
This is exactly the combination in our Colon Cleanse Tea (our best-seller since 2015): Pu'er + ginger + senna, in a carefully controlled dosage for dependable regularity without harshness.
2. Drinking enough water
This is the most underestimated cause of chronic constipation. Without enough water, stools become hard and difficult to pass. Aim for 1.5 to 2 litres of still water a day, sipping regularly rather than drinking large amounts at once. A glass of lukewarm water on an empty stomach when you wake up is particularly effective at triggering the colonic reflex.
3. Fibre (the right kind, at the right pace)
Fibre absorbs water in the gut and adds bulk to stools, which stimulates peristalsis. Aim for 25 to 30 g of fibre a day from:
- Fresh fruit with the skin on: apples, pears, kiwis (excellent for regularity), prunes
- Vegetables: spinach, broccoli, artichoke, beetroot, cooked carrots
- Pulses: lentils, chickpeas, kidney beans
- Wholegrains: rolled oats, brown rice, quinoa, wholemeal sourdough bread
- Seeds: chia (the champion: 10 g of fibre per 30 g), flax, psyllium
Important: if you increase your fibre, increase your water intake at the same time. Otherwise, you may paradoxically make constipation worse.
4. Moving every day
A sedentary lifestyle is one of the major drivers of modern constipation. Movement mechanically activates the bowels through the contraction of the abdominal muscles and the motion of the diaphragm. 30 minutes of walking a day is enough to make a noticeable difference within a few days. Walking after meals is particularly effective at stimulating the gastrocolic reflex.
5. A regular routine and listening to the urge
The colon works by habit. Ideally, set a regular time to go to the toilet (often in the morning after breakfast, when the gastrocolic reflex peaks). And above all, never ignore the urge: repeatedly holding it in is one of the most common causes of acquired constipation.
Good to know
A posture that makes things easier: raise your feet on a small footstool when you are on the toilet. This "modified squat" position straightens the colon and mechanically eases evacuation. A small trick that makes all the difference for many people.
Our best-seller for regularity
Colon Cleanse Tea: Pu'er, ginger and senna in a carefully controlled dosage. Our best-seller since 2015, used as a 14-day or 28-day programme or as a regular maintenance routine.
Discover Colon Cleanse TeaThe 3 mistakes to avoid at all costs
1. Relying on synthetic laxatives as a routine
This is the worst long-term solution. For a few days to deal with a one-off problem, why not. But used routinely for weeks or months, it is a downward spiral of dependency and colonic desensitisation. Choose well-dosed traditional plants instead, which do not have this habit-forming effect under normal conditions of use.
2. Cutting out fats drastically
Many people trying to "eat healthily" cut back too much on fat. Yet good fats (olive oil, avocado, oily fish, nuts) mechanically lubricate the digestive tract and help food move along. Without them, transit slows down.
3. Suddenly increasing fibre without drinking more
Fibre absorbs water. If you go from 10 g to 30 g of fibre a day without drinking more, you risk making constipation worse instead of better. Increase gradually (1–2 extra portions per week) and drink more at the same time.
Which programme to choose for your situation
You want to get things moving again occasionally (travel, stress, indulgences)
Colon Cleanse Tea, 1 cup in the evening for 5 to 10 days. Effects are usually noticed from the 2nd or 3rd cup, and regular transit returns quickly.
You have long-standing chronic constipation
The full Laxative Teatox programme over 14 or 28 days: Morning Tea (dandelion, nettle, lemongrass, mint, ginger, Oolong) to support digestion in the morning + Colon Cleanse Tea in the evening to support overnight transit. Round-the-clock support for lasting comfort.
You want to tackle constipation as part of an overall detox approach
The 28-day Teatox: Morning Tea + Evening Tea, 12 plants traditionally used to support drainage, digestion and transit. It is our most complete programme to help you rebalance your digestive comfort over time.
You want a long-term maintenance routine
Many of our customers drink Colon Cleanse Tea 2 to 3 evenings a week over the long term and tolerate it well. It is the most flexible format for keeping your transit regular without an intensive programme.
Your daily anti-constipation routine
When you wake up
A glass of lukewarm water with lemon on an empty stomach. A cup of Morning Tea (Teatox or Laxative Teatox) to get your digestion going.
Breakfast
Rich in fibre: oat porridge + fresh fruit + chia seeds, or wholemeal sourdough bread + avocado. A 5–10 minute walk after breakfast to activate the gastrocolic reflex.
During the day
1.5 to 2 litres of still water. Vegetables at every meal. Move regularly (avoid sitting for more than 2 hours in a row). If you work at a desk, walk for 5 minutes every hour.
In the evening
A light dinner rich in vegetables. An hour later, a cup of Colon Cleanse Tea (or the Evening Tea from the Teatox). A 10–15 minute digestive walk if possible.
At bedtime
Go to bed early if you can (deep sleep = better bowel activity overnight). A gentle clockwise circular self-massage of the abdomen for 2–3 minutes can help.
When to see a doctor
Most cases of constipation resolve very well with a natural approach. But certain warning signs should prompt you to see a doctor without delay:
- Sudden constipation after the age of 50 with no change in lifestyle
- Blood in the stool (bright red or dark)
- Unexplained weight loss together with constipation
- Severe abdominal pain or pain that persists
- Alternating constipation and diarrhoea that is new and persistent
- Chronic constipation in children or elderly people
These signs may point to a medical cause that needs a diagnosis. A natural approach then comes afterwards, as a complement.

FAQ
How quickly does Colon Cleanse Tea work?
The effect is usually noticed 6 to 12 hours after the evening cup, typically the next morning. For a regular routine (long-standing constipation), allow 3 to 5 days to see transit settle into a steady rhythm.
Can I take Colon Cleanse every day?
Many of our customers use it over the long term, 2 to 3 evenings a week, and tolerate it well. For prolonged daily use, listen to your body and adjust the dose if needed. If in doubt, ask a healthcare professional for advice.
Is senna safe?
At traditional doses and in well-balanced combinations such as our blends, senna has been used for decades without problems. Avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding, if you have inflammatory bowel conditions, and in children under 12.
Colon Cleanse or Laxative Teatox: what's the difference?
Colon Cleanse is a single evening tea: Pu'er + ginger + senna. Ideal for getting things moving again occasionally or as a maintenance routine.
Laxative Teatox is a complete morning + evening programme: Morning Tea (digestive support) + Colon Cleanse in the evening. Ideal for a more complete approach over 14 or 28 days, especially when constipation is long-standing and comes with other discomforts (bloating, heavy digestion, a sluggish feeling after meals).
Should I take a break between programmes?
It is not mandatory. Many customers alternate between Teatox, Laxative Teatox and Colon Cleanse depending on their needs at the time, or keep up a continuous maintenance routine. The most important thing is to listen to your body and adjust.
What side effects are possible?
The first cups can speed up transit quite noticeably (the intended effect, but worth anticipating). Start gently (one cup at the beginning of the programme to gauge your sensitivity). If you experience unusual cramps or marked discomfort, space out your cups.
